Introduction to the OIB International Section

The International Section programme provides a bilingual, bicultural education oriented towards the international option of the French baccalauréat (OIB) at the end of Terminale.

In addition to the standard French curriculum, students have six hours a week of English Language and Literature and four hours of History-Geography in English. Participation in the International Section is challenging and rewarding, requiring extra academic investment and personal motivation.

In Seconde year we develop the knowledge and skills that students will need to prepare the OIB exam.

In Première and Terminale, students prepare the British version of the OIB, an integrated Franco-British school-leaving certificate. It combines the breadth and rigour of the French baccalaureat with the extra subjects of English and History-Geography taught and examined in English to British A-level standard. It is jointly certified by the University of Cambridge International Examinations and the French Ministry of Education. The OIB diploma allows the students to study in both French and British Universities.
The OIB makes academic and linguistic demands to an equal level in English and French, providing students with a bicultural as well as a bilingual education. Students develop a capacity for hard work and an intellectual and cultural flexibility that give them the potential to become excellent undergraduates in Britain, the US, Canada, France and elsewhere.

Teaching Hours

Students study the usual subjects in the French Bac offered in three different categories: ‘L’ (Literary), ‘ES’ (Economics and Social Sciences) and ‘S’ (Scientific). Within these categories the English LV1 (first language) and History-Geography usually taken by the French students are replaced by the International Option subjects taught in English:  six hours of English and four hours of History-Geography.

The Exam

In addition to the subjects presented for the classic French Bac, the OIB exam consists of two written and oral exams in English Language and Literature and History-Geography, certified by Cambridge as equivalent to British A level (C2 language level) in standard. The weighting for these subjects are particularly high and vary according to the category of the Bac.

Important remark:
GH and LL weigh pretty much, even for a student who chooses à scientific path (filière S). The SI is therefore not suited for anyone who is not prepared to engaged seriously and deeply in history and geography and literature study (which is not the same as a LV (langue vivante) study).

Syllabus :

  • The syllabus in history and geography is the same as in the ES/L path, with some specificities:
  • Events, examples and case studies are chosen both from the French and the anglo-saxon world.
  • The documents studied by the students reflect the same diversity.
  • In Terminale year, the history of Britain since 1945 is one of the major topics, in addition to the general syllabus.
  • English literature syllabus:

In seconde we work on improving the skills you will need to prepare the OIB exam: essay writing, poetry, drama and prose analysis, presenting an informed personal response both in writing and speaking.
In première we begin the actual syllabus. here are the texts being studied for the OIB in 2017 and 2018.

  • les exemples, événements et études de cas sont choisis en référence à la culture française, mais également anglo-saxonne ;
  • Les documents étudiés sont choisis dans les deux aires culturelles ;
